Face Up, Down or Forward?
I don’t just alphabetize my things, I break them into categories. When my family moved to their current house, I decided to take over a bookshelf in the living room for my books that had been piling up in closets over the years. However, much like everything else I did as a teenager, I lacked all flair with organizing shelves. My dad explained that lining up as many books as possible on the shelves isn’t attractive. Aesthetics.
To this day though, the heavy boxes of books climbing up the walls of my storage unit are not packaged by size or color. I categorize everything I own. Literary fiction and pulp fiction, dress tops and tee shirts, pens and highlighters… Instead of tall v. short, blue v. orange, I file through possibilities to find the right pattern to fit series or topics together.
I’ve tried to apply aesthetics to my hunt. Not makeup and slick high heels but attitude. Maybe a better word would be face. I’m working on my face for the work world. Continue reading
They sure start early…
So who knew at the ripe old age of 5 there’d be boy-drama already…My daughter has a “friend” at school that she says she will be boyfriend/girlfriend with when they’re older. They’ve broken up weekly so I have my doubts. He’s given her a purple plastic ring that she keeps in her backpack but doesn’t wear. He doesn’t like her to have other friends in school so that’s usually when they break up and then he comes back the next day and decides it’s ok after all. It’s very entertaining to listen to but I can’t help but wonder, isn’t she too young to be bothering with this stuff? I say save the drama for later and just play and be a kid for now…not sure how to convince her though.
Get out and play in the leaves
If you’re like me and have plenty of leaves to rake at your home, instead of dreading the task, why not have a little fun with it and burn some calories while you’re at it!
It seems like the leaves this year have fallen earlier than usual. Which in my opinion is great, because 1) you know it’s going to happen eventually, so lets get it over with and 2) I’d rather be out in the yard during the mild fall weather that we’ve had then freezing out in 40 degree weather.
I love to let my dogs join in the activity. Raking is boring, tiring and just not fun. But raking a pile of leaves and having dogs run through the pile, romping and playing is just too cute. I’m sure someday if I have kids, that it’s been even more fun. But for now, I’ll let the dogs join me. Continue reading
Pan-roasted root vegetables
Ok, this is another recipe from Ina Garten’s , Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics cookbook, and it’s a simple side dish, really delicious and goes with almost anything. A recipe, as a matter of fact, you might want to keep in mind for Thanksgiving. It actually got me to try 3 vegetables that I had never eaten before- turnips, parsnips and celery root,-and it got me to not just like Brussels sprouts but to love them. I think that roasting vegetables, whether on the stovetop or in the oven, really makes them taste wonderful using just olive oil or butter, salt and pepper. And, I have always wondered what celery root was and tasted like ever since I heard Mr. Elton telling Harriet Smith, in the movie, “Emma,” that he loved celery root. Now I know and I love it too. It’s a kind of celery, has a celery flavor but it’s actually grown for the root and not the stems and leaves. It’s a pretty unattractive vegetable until you peel it to reveal the clean whiteness. If you’re looking for another fall recipe, this is one to try. Continue reading
Win or Lose, I’m Not Budging
So, I’m a football fan. It’s a new development. I started dating a big football fan sixish months ago and after a few home games, I’m a little hooked. My stepmom might say I’m the arch-nemesis of sports but it’s not true. I was more like the ambivalent popcorn girl.
I’ve decided relationships are about sharing and compromising (at least that’s my most recent view of it all), so I’ve been learning all about the game. Many things I was already familiar with from memories of marching band. I never quite understood why people took it so seriously until I willingly spend time in the stands at a live game.
The atmosphere is very electric, particularly at the beginning of the game. The Colts fans do this thing for “First Down” where they pound their seats. It’s supposed to sound like a herd of colts. The score board says “Feel the Thunder”…and that’s exactly what it feels like. With so many people pounding vigorously, the stadium vibrates with energy. After feeling that kind of excitement, it was hard for me not to want to be involved. Continue reading
