Going Without
I drink water all the time; in the morning with my breakfast, with my lunch, all day at work and again for dinner. So I’ve never really felt that bad about my daily Diet Coke that I enjoy when that mid afternoon slump hits.
Although it is “diet” I know that it’s still not good for me with the artificial sweeteners and chemicals, so I recently gave it up. We’ll see how long this lasts. (I could totally go for one right now…)
Reasons to stop drinking it? Well, for one I know it’s not good for your teeth. Even though diet sodas do not contain sugar that could contribute to cavities, the acid in the soda can dissolve the hard enamel of our teeth. Ways that you can reduce this from happening is to limit your intake to one can per day, drink through a straw (to reduce the direct contact to the teeth) and rinsing your mouth with water after drinking a soda. Cream Cheese and Raspberry Coffee Cake
I’m the kind of person that likes to get up on a Saturday or Sunday morning and either have breakfast being made by someone else or have scones or some baked good that’s already made that I can grab with some coffee and I’m happy. I’m never really awake enough to make breakfast myself, however, this recipe is the one exception. This coffee cake tastes great a day or two later but it’s best when it comes right out of the oven; that’s why it’s the one exception. I found this recipe in the Better Homes and Garden November 1997 issue. It can be served at a variety of events; it’s not just for breakfast. It’s a favorite with my whole family and it’s very hard to resist having a second helping so be warned!
So That’s What I Was Doing
I’ve been assisting in editing brochures for a small legal conference coming up. It’s an annual event full of the old, new and few. The purpose of the conference is the focus on the smaller law firms in Indiana. Speakers come and present tactics and tools to use in a small practice. I’m not a lawyer, but the lineup looks good. I guess this is where my information junkie steps in.
Before the cue balls and gavels arrive, lots of things need to be done. I have heard there is rumor of a small staff somewhere that gets paid to do some of the work… in the meantime; there are dozens of legal professionals musing around the design and writing components.
Currently, writing and basic design are all I know. I edit Motions and Orders for my boss but am regularly told that something I see as being grossly inaccurate or confusing is simply “a lawyer thing” or “legalese.” Continue reading
What are you Eating?
The last few weeks, I’ve come to realize that I (we) need to watch what we eat. I am not the epitome of health – even though I do love me some salad (drenched in Ranch dressing). I mean, I’ve known for years that I needed to get my health in check, but I must’ve read something about chicken and beef and how it’s processed and how much actual beef and chicken we eat compared to what we *think* we eat and I wanted to vomit. Just read one chapter in the book “The Omnivores Dilemma.” You’ll truly have a food breakdown.
Wait. No, it was about the removal of ”pink slime” in the beef at McDonald’s. Ugh – just typing that made my stomach hurt. Do you know how many Big Macs I’ve eaten in my life? Ironically, even though the thought disgusts me, I am craving a Big Mac now.
So, for almost two weeks now, my husband and I have been tracking our calories on My Fitness Pal (or MFP if you’re down with the lingo). I realize that counting calories is as old as time, but we have so much fun doing it because it’s social-media related. We can “friend” each other and write on each others walls with words of encouragement (or not) and literally just help keep each other honest. I’ve even started “following” some of my mommy friends, who have been doing it for MUCH longer than me. It’s encouraging to see a few of them who’ve lost 5 lbs. here or 15 lbs. since November. Part II: Being a responsible dog owner
This week I’m tagging on to my post from last week regarding tips for being a responsible pet owner. I’m focusing on dogs and things that are seemingly good for them, that are anything but.
I have a family member that insists on buying my dogs a “treat” every time they visit. While this is a very kind gesture, I am a little obsessive about what goes into my pets bodies. I watch what I put into my own body, and even more so for them. She means well, but I have repeatedly asked her to not buy those items and instead given other options that were ok. So how do the same items keep showing up? Ughh..
First and foremost thing to look for in a pet treat is where it is made. Do not (I repeat) DO NOT buy treats made in China. There have been many recent cases of pets ingesting rawhide bones, chews and treats that have become sick and some who have died. The problem is that some countries like Thailand and China use formaldehyde or arsenic in the tanning process for rawhide chews. Always make sure that you buy products made in the USA.
