I thought cold season was over?

Don’t you hate it when you try to do something good and somehow you get burned in doing so?

Volunteers were needed for my church’s childcare during services this last Sunday. I signed up thinking nothing of it, glad to help out with the cute kiddos. Several other friends were also volunteering in the same classroom, so it was good to see them and chat.

It wasn’t long before I noticed nearly all of the children had very runny noses and some were definitely coughing and not feeling well. During that hour, I was focused on reading to the kids and playing with toys. It didn’t even dawn on me until I was nearly done that I may catch whatever illness these kids had. Great.

I just knew it was inevitable. I haven’t had a cold since January and here it is in warm, sunny May and I now have a cold that took me down hard. I would have so much rather been busy working away at my job than in bed (all day and night) feeling awful, with my throat on fire, sipping chicken noodle soup and counting down the time until I could take more medicine to feel better. The day the track goes to the dogs

This weekend is the annual Mutt Strut benefiting the Humane Society of Indianapolis. On Saturday, April 28, dog lovers across Central Indiana will form teams or go as individuals and walk their dogs around the 2 ½ mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Last year more than 6,000 people attended the event. Hopefully this year the attendees with be even greater, despite the weather forecast predicting cold temps and rain.

I walked the Mutt Strut several years back with some friends. I took my best dog friend Jasmine and we had such a good time. I vowed to do it again (what a fun event to do with your dog AND raise money to help other dogs!) but each year something seem to come up. We’re out of town once again this year, but a good friend has formed a team and I’ll be contributing to the cause.

If you’re interested in participating, you can still sign up online or sign up the day of the event. If you can’t join, but still want to pledge a donation, you can do that too. For all the details, check out IndyMuttStrut.org.

Getting back in the workout routine

Although we experienced a warmer than usual early spring, it seems like lately the weather has leveled off to more normal temps for this time of year. While I’m back to wearing a light jacket when I leave for work in the mornings, I can’t help but think about summertime which will be here before we know it.

Now is as good of time as any to start thinking about fitting into your favorite swimsuit or shorts and start eating healthier and working out so that you’re ready to flaunt your figure once the thermometer starts heating up.

If the number of workouts you’ve been logging has dropped since your New Year’s Resolution, get back on track and try to work out for a minimum of 30 minutes 4-5 days a week. Continue reading

Dogs and their routine

Its funny to me how pets have their routines and when things get changed up, they get all out of whack.

Last week we watched not one, but two additional dogs at our home for friends who took their families on spring break. The first dog, Jack is an older lab mix who looks and acts like an old man. He’s laid back and likes to sleep a lot. The second dog was Greta a young, German Shepherd who is a fireball of energy.

My dogs two loved having visitors at first but as the days went on, with these new dogs stealing bones and toys (and affection from my husband and I), I think JJ and Sirius were ready to send them back to their own families.

As a big animal lover, I enjoyed having the extra doggies around and experiencing their different personalities. It was fun seeing the old dog (Jack) wrestle and play like he was a young pup with Sirius. And watch Greta, the German Shepherd, run around and act so strikingly similar to my own Shepherd who passed away last year. She has so much energy but is so affectionate and sweet. (I think the boys were jealous that I took up such a liking to her) Continue reading

No meat

Being in the Lenten season, where many restaurants are boasting seafood specials and other meatless dish for those who do not eat meat on Fridays, it reminded me of my attempt several years back to go vegetarian.

I love fruits and vegetables and soy-based products like Boca Burgers and Morningstar Farms products and often choose these items over higher fat and calorie meat options. So I thought it would be pretty easy to make the switch to vegetarian. I’m not one of those people that wouldn’t eat meat to make a political statement and it wasn’t that I was disgusted by eating animals, it was more that I liked the non meat options just as well so I thought I’d see if I could go without real meat.

It really wasn’t hard to stop eating meat, since I really didn’t eat much to begin with. But as the days, weeks and months grew on, I found myself craving chicken and steak, but was able to stick to my diet. I successfully ate vegetarian for about four months. Continue reading
